How to Get NHS Abortion Services

Self-referral with NUPAS

You can refer yourself to the NUPAS service by completing our online booking form or by calling 0333 004 6666.

GP referral to a licensed abortion clinic

Speak to your GP and ask for a referral abortion service. They will find you an appropriate provider or ask for a referral to NUPAS.

Sexual health clinic

Certain sexual health clinics can advise on providers for NHS abortion services.

I’m Not a UK Citizen, How Do I Access NHS Abortion Services?

Every year, thousands of women from outside the UK, particularly the Republic of Ireland, travel to England to access abortion services. NUPAS offers abortion services up to 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy.

Our dedicated services are tailored to the needs of international patients. We offer same-day consultations and treatments, often allowing you to travel, receive care, and return home in a single day.

We provide transportation to and from Manchester Airport and can assist with booking flights and accommodations.

We know how much of an extra cost travel can be. We provide discounted fees on private abortions for all international patients who travel to England for abortion care.

Can I get an abortion if I’m under 18?

We know that decisions about abortion can be difficult, especially for young people. If you’re under 18, you can access free NHS abortion services.

We encourage open conversations with loved ones, but we also understand that sometimes, privacy is essential. Our team is here to offer support and guidance throughout the process.

Your privacy is important to us. We won’t share information about your care with anyone unless we believe it’s necessary to protect your safety.

How many abortions can I have on the NHS?

Can I go to work the day after an abortion?

Yes, if you feel physically and emotionally well enough to work, you can return to work after your abortion. You must make sure you are prepared with period pads and painkillers as advised by your abortion provider.

If you have any complications, you need to contact NUPAS immediately and it may be that you can’t return to work for your safety. If you have a strenuous job, then you must consider giving yourself time to recover before manual or active jobs.
