Abortion Services in London

In the UK, abortion is a safe and legal medical procedure. It's a common part of reproductive healthcare services. Statistics show that over 200,000 women in England and Wales have an abortion annually, and roughly a third of women in the UK will have one by age 45. The NHS and licensed clinics provide abortion services. These services prioritise the health and safety of women. You can find confidential advice and support to make decisions about your pregnancy termination and sexual health needs.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill is a safe way of ending a pregnancy and it can be done in the comfort of your home as long as you meet the requirements. If you’re looking for abortion clinics in London, we can provide you with pills by post if you are less than 10 weeks pregnant.

The medical abortion process involves two medications:

  • Mifepristone: This medication is taken first and works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is essential for a pregnancy to continue developing. By blocking it, mifepristone stops the growth of the pregnancy. It's taken orally with water as a single pill.
  • Misoprostol: This medication is taken after mifepristone and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue. Misoprostol mimics natural hormone-like substances in the body called prostaglandins, which are involved in menstruation and childbirth. This can cause cramping and bleeding similar to a miscarriage. Misoprostol is typically taken as several pills, but the exact number may vary depending on the specific protocol used.

You will take up to 6 Misoprostol pills in a medical abortion. 4 of these can be either inserted into the vagina where they’ll dissolve or they can be placed between your cheek and gum for 30 minutes to dissolve before swallowing. If you do not start bleeding or only have light spotting you should take the remaining 2 Misoprostol pills in your treatment pack. Either place in the vagina again, or between your cheek and gum. When you use Mifepristone and Misoprostol together, it will cause an abortion.

NUPAS’s abortion clinics in London provide early medical abortions and will talk you through every detail of how to take the medications involved. If you ever have any concerns, speak to us immediately.
