Abortion Counselling

Looking after your wellbeing

We want to make sure you feel fully supported physically and emotionally through your abortion care journey.

Having an abortion can make you have lots of different feelings. Pregnancy hormones, as well as stressful situations, can cause a mix of high or low emotions. These emotions may feel more intense than usual.

It’s normal to have a wide range of changing emotions. These feelings may be different before and after the abortion. Sometimes the emotions feel positive. Sometimes they feel negative, or neutral. You may question if you’re making the right decision. You may feel relief in the decision you have made. Some people feel anger at having to make the choice. Some feel sadness, a sense of loss or guilt. For some, these feelings go away quickly. For others, the feelings last longer.

Each person and their circumstances are different. All emotions you feel are valid.

Some emotional stress can come from a lack of support. It may be easier for you to talk through your worries with a trained professional rather than family or friends. We offer both pre-abortion and post-abortion counselling for our patients.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a type of talking therapy. The sessions are led by a trained counsellor to give you space to talk and explore your feelings. Counsellors won’t judge you.

Counselling is non-directional. This means counsellors won’t give advice or tell you what to do. Decisions about your life will always be yours to make. Counsellors can offer coping strategies that may help your decision making.

We can offer counselling appointments to NUPAS patients or those considering an abortion with us. NUPAS counselling appointments take place over the phone with our trained, compassionate counsellors. All counselling sessions are confidential.

Pre-abortion Counselling

We offer counselling sessions for anyone considering abortion. In pre-abortion counselling you can discuss your feelings around pregnancy options. This can happen before booking your abortion appointment.

Our counsellors will not make decisions for you. They are there to listen to your feelings and work on coping strategies. If you decide to have an abortion, you can access care with us.

Booking a Counselling Appointment at NUPAS

We offer telephone counselling appointments for our abortion patients. Sessions are confidential and non-judgemental.

If you want to talk to a trained counsellor, a member of our friendly team can arrange an appointment.

Please note that our counselling appointments are not a crisis service. If you need urgent help for your mental health we can refer you to a specialist service.

If you don’t feel like you need counselling, but would still like a place to talk about your abortion decisions, visit our friends at www.abortiontalk.com. Their Talkline is for anyone with abortion experiences, including partners.

NUPAS can’t offer appointments to partners or other family members. If you are not a NUPAS patient and would like counselling, you can find information on NHS counselling services here.
