A condom splitting or slipping off during sex can be worrying, but try not to panic. There are steps you can take to look after your sexual and reproductive health.
Condoms are an effective way to help prevent pregnancy and reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) when used correctly. However, accidents can happen. Whether a condom has split, slipped off or come off during sex, it’s important to know what to do next.
At NUPAS, we want everyone to feel informed and supported when making decisions about their sexual health. Here’s what you need to know.
1. Consider emergency contraception
If a condom has split or slipped off and pregnancy is possible, emergency contraception may help prevent an unplanned pregnancy.
There are different types of emergency contraception available:
- Emergency contraceptive pill: Depending on the type, it can be taken up to three or five days after unprotected sex. The sooner you take it, the better.
- Copper coil (IUD): This is the most effective form of emergency contraception and can usually be fitted up to five days after sex. In some circumstances, it may be possible to fit it later.
It’s important to seek advice as soon as possible so you can understand which option is suitable for you.
Remember, emergency contraception does not protect against STIs.
If a condom splits or slips off, there may have been exposure to a sexually transmitted infection.
STIs don’t always cause noticeable symptoms, so it’s important not to assume everything is fine just because you feel well.
A sexual health clinic can offer confidential advice about testing, including when to get tested. Some infections can take time to show up on a test, so you may be advised to test again after a certain period.
If you’re concerned about possible HIV exposure, seek urgent medical advice. PEPSE (post-exposure prophylaxis after Sexual Exposure) is medication that can help prevent HIV and must be started within 72 hours of potential exposure, ideally as soon as possible.
3. Know when to take a pregnancy test
If pregnancy is possible following a condom failure, taking a pregnancy test at the right time is important.
- If you know when your next period is due, you can take a test from the first day of your missed period.
- If you don’t know when your next period is due, take a pregnancy test at least 21 days after the sex in question.
Taking a test too early may mean it doesn’t detect a pregnancy, so timing matters.
If your test is positive, you can speak to a healthcare professional about your options and the support available.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
Experiencing a condom split or slip can feel stressful, but you don’t have to work out what to do on your own.
A sexual health professional can help you understand your options, discuss emergency contraception, arrange STI testing and answer any questions you may have.
There is no need to feel embarrassed or judged. These situations happen, and getting advice early can help you make informed decisions about your health.
How can you reduce the chances of a condom splitting or slipping?
Although condom accidents can happen, there are some simple steps that can help reduce the risk:
- Check the expiry date before using a condom.
- Make sure the packaging is intact and open it carefully.
- Use a condom that fits properly.
- Put the condom on before any genital contact.
- Use water-based or silicone-based lubricant with latex condoms. Oil-based products can weaken latex.
- Hold the base of the condom when withdrawing after sex.
Using condoms correctly every time helps reduce the risk of both pregnancy and STIs.
