Unplanned Pregnancy Advice

What Are My Options?

Making a decision about an unplanned pregnancy can be a stressful time and you will likely feel a range of emotions surrounding which path to take. NUPAS are here to support you in your decision and offer impartial advice so you can make the best decision for you.

If you are pregnant and it wasn’t planned, there are three options to choose from:

  1. Go through with your pregnancy and become a parent
  2. Go through with your pregnancy and place the baby for adoption
  3. Terminating your pregnancy with an abortion

If you’ve had a positive pregnancy test and you didn’t plan on getting pregnant, you may want to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How do I feel about being pregnant?

If you are happy about your unplanned pregnancy, and you are looking forward to being a parent, then choosing to continue your pregnancy may be the right choice for you. If you feel anxious, uncertain and unprepared for parenthood, knowing your options and where to seek help can support your decision.

  • Is this the best time for me?

If you plan on having children one day but a sudden unplanned pregnancy will interfere with your current lifestyle, then you may feel overwhelmed. Adoption or abortion can mean proceeding with priorities like work, or education could be made easier without the responsibility of childcare. If you are perhaps too young or your health is at risk due to this unplanned pregnancy, then NUPAS will support you whatever you choose.

  • Will this pregnancy affect my future priorities?

If your future goals and plans are important to you and becoming a parent at this time doesn’t fit in with those hopes and dreams, then you may want to consider adoption or abortion. Asking yourself if having a baby would help you achieve your desires or not may be something to ask yourself, and whether choosing abortion would be better for yourself.

Unplanned Pregnancy: Abortion Care

Understanding more about abortion could help in your decision-making about an unplanned pregnancy. There are two types of abortion:

Early medical abortion

Early abortion involves taking the abortion pill up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.  There is no surgery involved and if you fit the requirements, this is a medication that can be taken in the comfort of your own home.

Surgical abortion

If you’ve been pregnant for more than 10 weeks, you will require a surgical abortion. This involves coming into the clinic for a procedure provided by our specialist. There are a couple of surgical abortion methods and the one you receive depends on the gestation of the pregnancy, your health and personal preference.

Methods of Surgical Abortion the NUPAS offers include:

  • Manual Vacuum Aspiration (up to 14 weeks of pregnancy).
  • Dilatation and Evacuation (from 14 weeks – 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy).

Your options for anaesthetic are also based on your health, length of pregnancy and personal choice:

Up to 10 weeks pregnant- local Anaesthetic and awake during the procedure

Up to 13 weeks and 6 days pregnant- awake but drowsy for the procedure

General Anaesthetic- asleep during the treatment

Before NUPAS offer you abortion treatment, you will be required to have a telephone consultation or a face-to-face appointment at one of our clinics. During your consultation, they’ll ask questions related to your medical history, and discuss the options for the type of abortion you meet requirements for. If you are referred for early medical abortion, then pills by post may be available to you. Your nurse will talk you through the stages of taking the medication, and your abortion kit will come with clear instructions.

It is paramount that you understand the abortion procedure and give your full consent to terminating your pregnancy. If our team believe you are in a situation that puts you at risk such as physically abusive relationships or coercion, then we may investigate with other professionals and ensure your safety. The NUPAS team are discrete and confidential with your abortion information and personal details. You are in a safe space with us.

If you change your mind about your abortion, this is fine, you can cancel your appointment at any time.
